He-She-Shed: My Future Creative Space

Imagining what we seek helps us achieve our goals.

Though I have The Herb, my in-home creative workspace, I have always wanted an outdoor Writer’s Shed.

My motivation for having an outdoor creative workspace was inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s revolutionary swivel shed. Due to a lack of electricity, Shaw would manually turn his shed to align best with the sun’s light allowing him the highest level of productivity every day.

While The Herb offers me a creative retreat, I seek an outdoor workspace so that I may disconnect from the on-goings of a busy home. Out there in nature (or best I can get here in the burbs), I am optimistic that detaching from the noise inside my home will provide me with a more introspective creative experience.

Additionally, what I lack in architectural research for this future shed I make up for in the imagination of its interior design. There in my future outdoor retreat, I will have:

• An upper loft for a twin-sized bed which will be blanketed by a flannel pattern comforter and sheets.
• Below the loft will be two spaces split down the middle. On the left will be a bathroom with a sheet covering the entrance and a kitchen on the right.
• Then in the common space, there will be a simple L-shaped work table that wraps around the left interior wall. There I will be able to write, draw, and map out new ideas.
• For seating, there will be one rolling computer chair and one high-backed royal armed cushion chair upholstered with velvet lining and metal helmet-capped buttons.
• The door entrance to the shed will be a simple, four window, cottage-like door. It will be positioned to the right of the L-shaped work desk.
• Each wall will have the maximum amount of windows allowing natural light to be the primary light source.
• There will be heat, likely a wood stove, but no AC.
• There will be a hook-up for electricity from my primary residency or by way of a renewable energy system.
• There will be no running water, so the necessary amount needed for copious amounts of coffee brewed will be carried in daily.

While I am emotionally invested in a project that has yet to begin, I feel we all must engage in our dreams with a strong commitment. By doing so, we are more likely to keep disciplined in our attainment of future goals.

Much like the carrot on a stick hung just out of reach for the stubborn donkey, imagining our dreams being so detailed and close keeps us moving forward. However, just like the donkey, if we pull this imaginary goal away from our focus we will likely suffer by no longer pushing ourselves forward.
